Completed!

I got my US Coast Guard license "Master of steam, motor, or auxiliary sail vessels of not more than 100 gross tons upon Great Lakes and Inland Waters also, authorized to engage in commercial assistance towing."

I also got my OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels) for near coastal waters.

I needed this license to start my yacht delivery business, which lasted four years until my son was born. If it's even possible, being a successful yacht delivery captain means you have to be available to disappear for a week without any notice. That isn't happening for me now...

Information on getting your captain's license is available at http://www.uscg.mil/stcw/index.htm. Although I was able to self-study and take care of the application and exam process myself, within the past few years there has been an explosion in the availability of courses that teach you how to pass the exam. These courses can help you through the extensive application process as well.
