Compete in the Men's Health Urbanathlon in NYC on 9/27.
So I sit here with a glass of champagne in hand, watching Invincible (sucker for a good sports - preferably football - feel good movie) and recooping. From what you ask? At 7:00 a.m. this morning I stood at the Band Shell in Central Park with 999 other runners, including my friends Linda and Volpe. It was dark and rainy but all the physically fit people were ready for the challenge. The legs of the race were as follows:
Leg 1 - 2.89 mile run to a pier where we had to jump barricades and crawl through tunnels.
Leg 2 - 4 mile run and half way through a stop at a pier where we had to crawl under a truck, cross 10 monkey bars, crawl under a cargo net that was only about a foot off the ground, and lift ourselves over 5 foot tall hurdles. At the end of this leg we entered 7 World Trade Center and climbed 52 stories up and then back down (over 2000) stairs!
Leg 3 - 1 1/4 mile run to the finish line where we threw ourselves over a cab and climbed a rope wall to the finish line.
2 hours and 15 minutes later, Linda and I crossed the line triumphantly! What a sense of accomplishment!
I could not think of a better place for this race. The sights and sounds of the city blaring in my ears, with my friend, eye shot distance in front of me. I ran next to a woman with one leg and chills ran up my spine. We lifted one another other over hurdles and cheered each other on. Even though it was every man for themselves, the camaraderie is what pulled us all through. I am proud to be a New Yorker and just as proud to have conquered this next goal - check this one off the list!!!!! Wooooooooooooooooooooo!
