I took German and Spanish in High School and I don't remember a damn thing. I really want to learn either Spanish or Japanese and then be able to communicate with with people on a regular basis.

Be Fluent in French
I have taken french since I was 13. I have not had the opportunity to travel to a Franco-phone country, which I know will help. I do watch movies in French, or with French subtitles.

I've been working on Spanish forever. Recently took up arabic. I've read that knowing more than one language increases your life expectancy (and your coolness factor). :D
